David has stunned us with beautiful pencil drawings of
Meredith and Shirley. But we actually know little about him. He's an amazing
artist, but that's about it. In this interview I talked with him about
his personal life, his thoughts on Shirley and his future ambitions.
INTERVIEW
WITH DAVID RIBEIRO
First, tell us a bit about yourself.
Well, I actually live in Brazil. I live in São
Paulo to study and work but sometimes I spend my time in my parent´s
house, in a little town. I'm 21, studying Cinema in college and I intend
to be a screenplayer or director of art of the movies. I also write some
movie reports. I´ve working with paintings for sometime, and I´ve
made two expositions of my pictures. Actually I´m making some illustrations
for magazines or papers, some storyboards and making my own work. I like
music, movies, theater, drawing and write poetry. Gee, I guess I´ve
talked too much about my self...
How did you get into Shirley Holmes?
I was watching TV, you know, passing over the channels
and so I saw a girl holding the Sherlock Holmes hat... And I had just finished
to read a book about Holmes and I was curious. So I decide to watch the
show. And after that I saw that it was very interesting. I thought to myself...
"It´s something like Sherlock Holmes dressing in a skirt. It sounds
cool!" And after that I started to watch the show everyday.
Any favorite characters on the show?
Well, I know that it´ll be a very common choice...
but Shirley is my favorite. That girl, with that strange hats on her head,
looking for the right answer for a mystery... It´s Amazing. I also
like Molly (you know, a great hero needs a great villain) and Molly is
perfect. I think Shirley´s Gran is a little funny... I like her too.
Your pencil drawings are amazing. Where did you learn
to draw so well?
I didn´t have any teacher to learn me that. I don´t
remember how it hapenned. I guess I draw since I was 8. I used to watch
the TV cartoons and after the show, I sat on my bed and drew all that characters.
My mother still
have my first drawing ( that I made in school when I
was 3 - but that is just a spot). And so I keep drawing ´til today.
And now I try to make drawings that looks a little better than that spot
:) God help me!
Are you working on a picture at the moment and can
you reveal anything about it?
Yes, I am. I´m drawing two pictures of Meredith
(one colored and one in black and white ). And I´m planning to draw
a Shirley Holmes comic book, like a fanfic. The problem is that I´m
a little busy these days, But I intend to do it next month. [This interview
was put up late, so he is probably busy right now!]
Do you have aspirations to write a fanfic?
Yes, I have some ideas for mystery stories and I hope
that I could make a comic book with one of my stories some day.
Any work from fellow artists like in particular?
Well, I like the pictures of an American girl artist that´s
named Kara Walker too much . I met her in Brazil and her work is impressive!
And about the SH fan arts, I like the pictures of a girl named Jessica
Soerdigo. She makes
some interisting montages and she writes so well. That´s
very cool.
Any tips for fellow fan-artists out there?
At first, be honest with yourself and draw things that
you truly like. You all know that a good work is made with 10% of inspiration
and 90% of transpiration. So, get used to do drawings anytime you can.
Draw ever. And don´t care if someone says that your work is bad,
fool, etc. The most of the people that say that, just want to say that
you are ridiculous. So, nevermind! :)
Thanks to David for answering all
those questions. Got an author you want to see questioned? Let me know
and send a question along in the message. You can send
me an e-mail or use the contact page.
